What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is your own identity on internet. Domain name examples are sony.com, mtv.com or cnn.com . You can get yourchoice.com as long as it is available. Domain names are divided into 2 categories: Top Level Domain names (.com, .org, .net, .edu, .mil, .gov, .int extensions) and as international domain names [.uk (United Kingdom), .ru (Russia), .se (Sweden), .nl (Holland), .ca (Canada) etc]. What is Hard Disk Space?

Hard disk space is the total amount of space in megabytes allocated to you on our server. It includes your FTP directory, HOME directory and mail spool (POP3 Directory). Extra space can be requested. If you are over your allocated quota, you will be automaticaly upgraded to the next account.

What is Telnet?

Telnet enables you to execute commands on your site as if you are sitting in front of our server. It lets you contol another computer as if you are physically in front of the terminal there.

What is UNIX Shell Access?

Unix is the operating system of our server. Shell Access allows you to telnet in and use various programs already installed there. Some examples are PINE (an easy to use e-mail client), LYNX (web browser), PICO (a text editor), MAIL (a primitive e-mail client), IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and networking tools like NSLOOKUP, WHOIS, FINGER, RWHOIS.

What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) enables you to you to upload and download files to/from your site. Your password-protected FTP host will be in the form: ftp.yourcompany.com

What is POP3 E-Mail Account?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) Password protected e-mail accounts enable you to download your mail to your local computer through the use of an e-mail client like Eudora or Pegasus. E-Mail addresses will be in the form of: yourcompany@yourcompany.com (standard with each account) and/or you@yourcompany.com

What is monthly WWW transfers?

Total amount of hits your site will get in terms of bandwidth. 1 GB is standard with each account.

What is Multimedia Support?

Multimedia support allows you to use or program special options on your web site. Our Servers support all major multimedia types and applications. If we are missing one that you need, please contact us and we will install it for you. What is Anonymous FTP?

Each domain has its own anonymous FTP directory that lets the other users or your guests upload and download files in your domain. Anonymous FTP users log in to ftp.yourcompany.com with user name anonymous and password as their e-mail addres. For security reasons, anonymous FTP directory is seperated from your main FTP directory. We regularly monitor anonymous FTP sites for illegal material.

What is CGI-BIN access?

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. It allows you to execute programs on the server from your HTML pages. BIN stands for BINARIES (executable programs). You will get your own cgi-bin diretory where you can place your own programs or scripts. While we do not want the scripts submitted to us before they are utilized, we expect them to be reasonable in their use of system resources. Programs that use up system resources will be terminated by our system guards.

What is Web Site Statistics?

Our powerful Wusage 5.0 program helps you determine the true impact of your site. Its reports tell you who, how, what, and why people are looking at your pages! It produces graphs, tables, and pie charts (strawberry rhubarb) detailing accesses per hour, per day, and per week. Wusage generates document trails detailing how customers like to travel between web pages on your site. Wusage tells you which pages are most popular on your site. What is E-Mail Forwarding?

Forwarding enables you to redirect all the mail that comes to your site to another e-mail address. You also have the option of keeping a copy of the mail in your site while forwarding it. For example, you might want to forward your main address: yourcompany@yourcompany.com to name@othercompany.com

What is E-Mail Aliases?

E-mail aliases enable you to forward real e-mail address or non-existent e-maill address to other e-mail addresses. You also have the option of keeping a copy of the mail in your site while redirecting it. For example, you might want to redirect the mail that comes to: someone@yourcompany.com to name@othercompany.com Note that the address "someone" does not need to exist on your domain for this to work. This gives you flexibility in managing your mail.

What is E-Mail Auto Responders?

By simply putting a text file in your home directory, you can respond the e-mails automatically. For example if you type some information about your company into a file named "info" and place it in your home directory, any user that e-mails info@yourcompany.com will receive the contents of this file without any manual effort from your site.

What is E-Mail Auto Acknowledgement?

Users that mail to you will automatically get an acknowledgement saying that their e-mail has been received and is under process. You can customize the file according to your needs or you can disable it altogether.

What is WWW Logs and where are they located?

Log files are stored in CLF (Common Log Format) and is available in your web directory as www-access-log. This gives you greater flexibility if you are not content with our wusage program or you want to build usage and visit databases relative to your log files.

By logging the autoresponders on your site, you get a better picture of who is requesting which document. This is very useful for collecting marketing reports about your visitors.

What do people see when the access our RESERVED Domain?

They will see a page saying this domain hosted by X5 Networks. They might be redirected to X5 Networks web site as well .

What will be the ownership rights on RESERVED Domains?

You will have the total control since you will be listed as Administrative and Billing Contact on Internic databases. Therefore you can transfer or move you domain to another provider whenever you want. Note that Initial 3 months' payment should be made if you want to move your domain in order to cover our overheads. This fee is not refundable. You can query your domain here after it has been registered.

Why do I need you to RESERVE a domain?

In Registration process, InterNIC requires a DNS service be present for a domain. Therefore you will need to utilize our nameservers TESLA.X5.NET and BLUES.X5.NET in order to get your application accepted. We will also submit the Registration Forms on your behalf to ensure that everything goes smoothly and the correct Contacts addresses have been specified.

Would i get WWW space for my RESERVED domain?

No. Reserve Accounts are not active accounts. Therefore they cannot serve HTML pages to visitors. In order to have an active doman, you will need to upgrade to another account. Reserve accounts make sure that the domain name belongs to you and it will be ready for you to use when you want to publish your pages.

Can i get any facilties on RESERVED domains?

No. You can't. We don't provide e-mail, ftp or other services on RESERVED domains.

Is continued Domain Name Service provided by you for our RESERVED domain?

Yes. And this is compulsory for us to ensure that you don't lose your domain. Internics policy on this matter: After receipt/processing of a name registration template, and at random intervals thereafter, the InterNIC will perform a DNS query via UDP Port 53 on domain names for an SOA response for the name being registered. If the query of the domain name returns a non-authoritative response from all the listed name servers, the query will be repeated at random intervals. If the name servers still provide no SOA response, the name will be placed in a "hold" status and the DNS information will no longer be propagated. The domain will then be deleted and made available for re-registration."

What can we do if the domain name we want is taken by someone else?

You should try another version of your domain. Try different ways of representing you company, or choose something that represents your products or activities more closely. It is better to find something that resembles your image closely than waiting, in which case you are likely to find nothing.

How long does it take to register a domain name?

InterNIC usually has new Domain Names up and running within a week at the most (frequently just a couple of days). However, we cannot guarantee the time frame for a new Domain setup. It's totally dependent upon the InterNIC's current workload (we do our part very quickly).

How do i select a proper domain name extension?

.COM: For commercial organizations .ORG: For non-profit organizations or companies that don't fit into any category .NET: For network infrastructure machines.

Am i guaranteed to get the domain name once i submit the order form?

No. Even if the InterNIC shows that the Domain Name you want is available, there is a very small chance that someone else might request that Domain Name at the same time you do (or slightly before). In reality, this happens very, very rarely. But it is a remote possibility. If this happens, you will NOT be charged by us (or the InterNIC, of course). It is important, however, that you register your Domain as soon as possible if you see that it's available, or you take the risk of losing it. Many people thought they had time.... and learned the hard way.

Someone else has the domain that our organization has copyright and trademark for. Can we take it away from them?

Maybe, but understand first that we will not get involved in your Domain Name disputes. If you have a problem with a Domain Name registration, take it up with the InterNIC.
