InterNIC is the sole body responsible for registering Top Level Domains (TLDs) in the world. TLDs are:
.COM: for commercial establishments
.NET: for network infrastructure machines
.ORG: for organizations that don't fit in any other category
.EDU: for degree-granting educational institutions
.GOV: For government or federal agencies
.INT: (sparsely used, obsolote) for international companies
.MIL: for military (now handled by nic.ddn.mil)
Normally all the computers on the internet are known through their IP (Internet Protocol) numbers and all the low level communications are carried out this way. For example, the IP number for x5.net is 207.213.164.26 But these numbers are very hard to memorize and distribute, making them inefficient in day-to-day communications. Domain Name System handled by InterNIC transforms these IP numbers to human readable domain names transparently in the root servers. Therefore the users don't need to be concerned about IP numbers at all in their communications.
